We’re bursting with pride and excitement here at the Rapids Riders ATV Club! Our collaborative effort, the Northwoods Regional ATV Trail Alliance (NWRATA), has been recognized with the highest honor in the off-highway vehicle community: the National Off-Highway Vehicle Conservation Council (NOHVCC) Club of the Year award!

This prestigious award, announced at the NOHVCC Annual Conference, celebrates the monumental achievement and unwavering dedication of NWRATA and its eleven member clubs, including our very own Rapids Riders. The award was formally recognized at the Itasca County Board Meeting on November 4th, 2025, a truly special moment for everyone involved.

A Vision Realized: From 70 Miles to a 500-Mile Legacy

The journey to this award began over two decades ago. In 2003, the Minnesota State Legislature allocated funds for “The 70-mile Trail Project,” with a bold vision: to connect Aitkin and Itasca Counties and eventually grow into a 500-mile system.

Fast forward to 2025, and that vision has become a reality! NWRATA has officially reached and surpassed the 500-mile threshold, creating the largest interconnected ATV trail system in the upper Midwest! This sprawling network now spans eight Minnesota Counties, all interconnected under the vital Minnesota Trail Assistance Program, also known as Grant-In-Aid.

This award is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and collaborative spirit of everyone involved. To see our collective efforts recognized on a national stage is incredibly motivating. We’ve built something truly special here, providing world-class riding experiences while fostering responsible recreation.”

More Than Just Trails: A Hub for Adventure, Innovation, and Economic Impact

The Northwoods Regional ATV Trail System isn’t just about mileage; it’s about quality, innovation, and community impact.

Unrivaled Connection: Our 500 miles of trails aren’t just local loops. They allow riders to venture all the way to the Canadian border, cross into Wisconsin, and even extend into Upper Michigan, making it a true regional hub for off-road adventure.

Top-Rated Experiences: Many segments, such as the Emily Outing, Hill City, Nemadji, and UPM Blandin trails, are consistently rated among the best in Minnesota for their scenic beauty and thrilling riding experiences.

Challenge & Skill Building: For those looking to test their mettle, the system offers two dedicated challenge areas: the Axtell and Soo Pits riding areas.
Leading the Way in Innovation: NWRATA introduced trail counters in 2019, consistently showing a strong upward trend in ridership, now exceeding 200,000+ counts annually. We’ve also pioneered “selfie stations” for riders to capture their memories and implemented unique “puncheon” style boardwalks and railroad grade-grading techniques to ensure sustainable and enjoyable trails.
Significant Economic Driver: A 2024 economic impact study conducted by Aitkin County confirmed the substantial positive impact the trail system has on the north-central Minnesota economy, bolstering local businesses and tourism.
Headwaters of ATV Recreation: Just as Itasca County is the headwaters of the Mississippi River, it’s also proudly regarded as the “head start” for ATV Recreation Trails in Minnesota.

A Collaborative Spirit: The Power of 11 Clubs

The success of NWRATA is a direct result of the continuous efforts of its eleven member clubs. This alliance meets quarterly to meticulously plan improvements, actively promote the trails, and constantly seek opportunities to connect more trails and welcome new clubs.

Our alliance clubs have been active participants in the broader ATV community, hosting numerous Ride & Roast and Ride & Rally events for the All-Terrain Vehicle Association of Minnesota (ATVAM), and even hosted a NOHVCC workshop in Isle, MN, back in 2018. The original sponsoring counties, Aitkin and Itasca, continue to be invaluable partners in this incredible journey. Recent articles in MN Wheelin Magazine have further showcased the trail system and the strength of our alliance.
